Frequently Asked Questions

1. What grades does Bracken County Online serve?
Bracken County Online (BCO) serves students in grades 6-12.  In addition, it offers a pathway to graduation for high school students.

2. How do I apply for Bracken County Online?
The parent/guardian should complete and submit the Bracken County Online Application on the Bracken County Schools Webpage.  Once submitted, the application will be approved or denied by the school principal.  If approved, the principal will schedule a parent conference with the parent/guardian/student to review the program, discuss the student’s academic progress, and sign the contract for participation.  If denied, the principal will inform the parent/guardian of their decision.  All applications must be received prior to the beginning of the grading period to be considered.

 3. Am I able to enter and leave Bracken County Online whenever I would like and return to my home school for traditional instruction?
BCO is a commitment for a full academic year. If there are extenuating circumstances, you can request to be considered for entry into BCO or a return to traditional in person instruction at the end of each grading period, but it’s not guaranteed.  Likewise, entry into the program can only be considered at the beginning of a grading period.  Enrollment and withdrawals in and out of the program will not be permitted once the grading period begins.

 4. Will my student be able to participate in school activities like sports, prom, club events, and other activities while enrolled as a Bracken Online student?Yes, students can participate in all of the after-school extracurricular activities at their regular school.

Yes, dual enrollment students can apply to BCO and take remaining high school courses online.

 8. Will I be provided with my own Chromebook, or do I need to purchase one?
Bracken County Schools provide all students with a Google Chrome Book and charger that must be returned prior to the last day of school.  Note:  BCO Students are responsible for providing their own internet service.

 9. Will I have to come to the BCHS/BCMS campus?
Yes, BCO Students are required to take state and local assessments, attend class, teacher, and parent meetings.  If academic remediation is necessary, the student will be required to attend.  In addition, BCO Students are required to attend any other functions or event as required by the school administration.  Failure to cooperate may jeopardize participation in the program.

 10. How are courses structured and can I complete the courses at my own pace?
Edgenuity courses have daily pacing goals. In Edgenuity, students can work ahead and finish the course early. If a student falls behind in an Edgenuity course, their grade will be negatively impacted until they catch up.

11. Are there specific times I have to be available for classes?
No, you will not be required to have a specific time that you are actively working on the assignments or meeting with your instructor. The coursework is asynchronous and designed to be completed at any time during the week.

 12. Can I get help from a teacher?
Absolutely! All students enrolled in BCO will have access to a certified teacher. Office hours are held weekly for students to have access to their teacher through Google Meet/Classroom and email.  The instructor is available during normal school hours for support.

13. If I have a 504 Plan or IEP, can I attend Bracken County Online?
Yes, students with a 504 or IEP are eligible to attend BCO after a 504 or IEP meeting is held at the home school and the team agrees on a change of placement and a change of accommodations that reflect support in a virtual learning environment.

14. What if I experience technical difficulties?
Contact your teacher for assistance. They should be able to help you troubleshoot any issues you encounter.  Students should make every effort to resolve technical issues to remain current on coursework.

15. How can I stay organized and manage my time effectively?
Create a schedule or planner to keep track of your assignments, due dates, and class schedules. Take breaks and give yourself time to recharge. Avoid distractions and try to stick to a routine. It is recommended that students approach BCO like you would a brick-and-mortar setting.

16. Are students in BC Online permitted on campus during school hours?
Yes, a school may utilize student time on campus for interventions, testing, participation in performance classes such as band, CTE Courses, or Work-Based Learning, and other possible scenarios.  Schools should have a system to determine when a student is on campus that align with attendance verification for course enrollment.  BCO Students will provide their own transportation.

 17. If I participate in Work-Based Learning and/or Mason County Career Magnet School, can I also be a BCO Student?
